Monitors
Two and three screens that travel with the laptop
Updated · Research-based, not lab-tested · How we review
A laptop screen extender is a different purchase from a portable monitor, even though shops file them together. It clips to the laptop lid and travels open with the machine, which buys you two or three screens anywhere — and costs you weight on a hinge that was never designed to carry it. Two things decide which one fits: how many panels you actually need, and whether your laptop can carry them. Check the hinge before you check the specs — a light 13- or 14-inch machine can end up tipping backwards with a triple-panel unit attached. Every pick links to a full review with what the manufacturer states and what we could not verify.

One USB-C cable carries picture and power only if the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. Otherwise you need the monitor's HDMI input plus a separate power cable.
Check your laptop →A triple-screen extender takes one connection per panel. Base M1, M2 and M3 MacBooks drive one external display with the lid open; DisplayLink models are the workaround.
The laptop port, the cable and the monitor input all have to support it, and the operating system has to be set to it. Any one of them caps you at 60Hz.
Why it stays at 60Hz →Many laptops cannot power a bright portable screen on battery. A second USB-C port on the monitor lets a charger feed it directly.

If you are not sure, start with a single or dual panel. Triple-screen units are genuinely transformative for spreadsheet and trading work, but they are the heaviest thing in this category and the least forgiving of a light laptop. And confirm your laptop's USB-C port actually carries video before you buy anything here — no extender can add that. Check Amazon for current pricing and recent reviews before buying.
